Well hello there! Here I am, finally emerging from my quarantined bedroom, to bring you today’s hot-button issue: mixing metals.
People have mixed feeling about mixing metals but I, for one, am a major proponent.
When it comes to choosing finishes for a space, I like to use this rule of thumb: at least two, no more than three different finishes per room. If you stick with only one finish, 99% of the time you’re going to lose dimension and the space will read flat (a.k.a. boring). Keep things interesting by incorporating a second finish – this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have an even amount of stainless steel and oil-rubbed bronze. Nay, you can opt for adding a different finish for just one item – say, the sink faucet, or a pendant light.
Let’s take a look at some spaces that do this well, shall we?
This kitchen by Studio McGee really nails the multiple finishes look. Notice the brass cabinet hardware, stainless steel appliances, and just a hint of black with the bar stools and pendant mount.
This one by Becki Owens is bananas. The faucet, the pendants, the shelves, I mean come on! But the stainless steel stove breaks up what could otherwise start to read monotonous and one-dimensional.
Another Becki Owens gem, this one is sheer perfection. She stuck with brass and stainless, because that big black iron window is the real star of the show here.
Ok, starting to realize most of my picks are by Becki (what can I say? I adore her work). This one blows me away, I could really live out my french girl dreams here. Just look at that hood, just look at it! And she went with unlacquered brass which patinas so beautifully with age, and adds depth to the space.
More Becki, and this one does brass, stainless, and black so damn well.
This one proves you can don’t have to go crazy to create dimension. The all-black hardware keeps things looking monochromatic and clean, while the stainless steel element adds just a touch of change.
This kitchen by Chris Loves Julia nails it with mixing metals. It’s a fairly small kitchen so there’s lots of stainless steel happening with the appliances, but they keep things interesting with the brass knobs, faucet, and sconce.
