So you’re looking to make your home feel a little less “winter is coming” and a little more “southern California in the spring?” Fret not, folks. Today I’ll walk you through six simple ways to bring a little of that summer “jzush” into your home. Mid-day hammock nap not included.
STOCK THE BAR
You don’t have to be a drinker to enjoy a well-styled bar cart. Fill it up with fun and summery beverages (La Croix and San Pellegrino are my faves) and add flair with cute straws and other bits and bobs. Check out Oh Joy!’s new line at Target for more inspiration – it is caaa-ute!
FRESH FLORALS
Duh. This one’s so obvious, but also the easiest. There are always great blooms at local farmers markets, or if you’re trying to pinch pennies you can usually pick up something at Trader Joe’s for a few bucks. The effect fresh flowers has on a room is incredible. I think bringing something living into your home, whether through plants or flowers, actually makes a home feel more alive and full of energy.
SWAP OUT YOUR BEDDING
In the winter months I love layers upon layers of quilts and comforters on a bed. It feels so cozy. But in the summer I want something lighter and airier (read: LINEN). Soften things up with lighter colors and maybe a fun printed pillow or two. Pare down the layers to just one or two quilts/comforters. Your body will also thank you mid-sleep.
PUMP UP YOUR PILLOW GAME
Keeping in the textile vein, think about switching out your pillows for fun, colorful prints (hello palm print!). An easy way to make it feel fun and summer-y is to incorporate some bold color. Even if you’re a minimalist, try placing just one brightly colored pillow on a couch or chair and see how it makes you feel. If you’re feeling especially daring (which I hope you are) give Carla’s post on bubblegum pink a read and tell me what you think.
BRIGHTEN UP YOUR BATH
Summer is the perfect time to embrace light and fluffy towels in the bathroom. The great thing about white towels is you can bleach the shiz-nat outta them. Actually, I use a scoop of Oxiclean with my white loads to keep those puppies pristine. Also, there’s something about sun-tanned skin against a fluffy white towel that gives me all the nostalgia feels.
KEEP A CANDLE BURNING
Playtime! Find some cute candles with juicy summer scents to liven up your place! I especially love this, this, this, this, and this. And since scent has been linked to memory association, rest easy that you’re setting yourself up for some sweet summer memories down the road.
And there you have it. Six easy, affordable ways to get that laid-back summertime vibe. Anything I missed? Fill a sister in!
