I’m just gonna come right out and say it: I find this time of year to be – how should I put it – CHALLENGING.
I know most people are usually still glowing from the holiday season bliss, and New Year’s resolutions have been made with the utmost commitment and vigor. People feel refreshed and inspired to take on the new year and kick some serious butt. But for me, the stretch between January and March is where the going gets tough. Days are dreary, light is sparse, and my bed seems to have a tighter-than-usual grip on me in the mornings. Most days, I just feel tired. The kind of tired that gets inside your bones and weighs you down so that by afternoon you feel like you’re using all your muscles just to stand upright. That tiredness is my close companion this time of year. And I battle it the only way I know how: boatloads of coffee.
Now let me tell you a little ditty about my love affair with coffee. That stuff is sometimes the only thing that can lure me out of bed in the morning.
There was a phase in college where I was getting up super early to run before my morning classes. I remember trying to get caffeine into my bloodstream ASAP. I was so desperate I tried everything – from H2Joe to caffeinated gum. Yes, gum. No, I would not recommend it. It turned out all I really needed was to get to bed earlier. That, coupled with a large cup of coffee in the morning, seemed to be the winning recipe for a while.
But as my life went on, so did my tolerance for caffeine. Suddenly it was two large cups of coffee, then three. And here’s the thing: I drink my coffee black. (Yes, I know, I really am a 95-year-old man inside.) Three large cups of black coffee is not a good look on me. Read: stinky breath and stained teeth. So when I learned about pureLYFT, I was intrigued. As much as I love my morning coffee, it would be nice to have the option to add caffeine to any drink of my choice.
So I gave it a whirl and I have to say, it’s actually a pretty cool premise. Added caffeine without the annoying sugar in energy drinks or the risk of nasty coffee breath has me pretty excited you guys. I love that I can stir one into whatever I want – water, tea, juice. It is just the right amount of caffeine, without leaving me jittery or worse, still tired.

Would I ideally like to rid myself of the caffeine addiction for good? You betcha. My yoga-practicing, granola-crunching, vegetarian sister has kicked her caffeine habit to the curb, and it’s inspiring. I hope one day I can too. But until then, when it’s 1:00pm and I need a pick-me-up, I’m glad to know I’ve got options.
